Alabama Tag Renewal Requirements under Mandatory Liability Insurance Law Effective January 1, 2013
Minimum liability insurance required on all self-propelled motor vehicles. Some vehicles that are exempt from law include trailers, government-owned vehicles and vehicles covered under a commercial automobile liability insurance policy. Section 32-7a-5, Code of Alabama 1975, provides a list of other vehicles that are specifically exempt from the law.
Please provide the following items if renewing in person or online at the Walker County Probate Office - License Division or copies if renewing via mail on online.
Current Alabama Insurance card including policy number, NAIC number, and effective date
Valid ID for each individual listed on the vehicle Registration
Renewal notice on vehicle registration for each renewal
Include current mailing address, cell, number, and email address
All renewal information must be complete in order to renew by USPS
Amendments to Section 32-8-30, Code of Alabama 1975, require that if the owners legal name has changed from the name on the certificate of title, an application for corrected certificate of title must reflect the current owners legal name. Registration cannot be completed until a corrected title has been made and completed.

Renewal Schedule
Alabama Law requires annual registration of vehicles each year. A registrants vehicle tax year is determined on a staggered basis and is based on the first letter of the last name of the registrant.

- Persons with temporary disabilities may be issued a temporary placard valid for a period not to exceed six (6) months.
- Persons with permanent disabilities who are owners of private passenger automobiles to include pickup trucks and recreational vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 12,000 pounds or less may be issued one (1) blue disability access decal (per vehicle) to be adhered to the top left corner of the license plate and one (1) windshield placard (per person), or Two (2) windshield placards.
- Organizations that transport individuals with a disability are only eligible to apply for a disability access license plate decal.
